上人法語

  •   天真,是自性天真,表現出的是安詳親和,而不是幼稚,也不是停留在小孩無知的階段;那是愚癡,會讓他人輕視。
      Naiveté is innocence in nature, displaying a state of peace, auspicious, kindness and amiableness; it is not childish, nor implies ignorance or stupidity.
  •   要包容他人的過失,因為他人可能是不知而犯錯;若要規勸,也要私底下告知。若是自己犯錯,更要虛心接受別人的規勸。
      Be tolerant of others’ faults, because other people may make mistakes out of ignorance; if you want to give well-meaning advice, do it privately. If you have done wrong yourself, you have to accept the advice from others with an open mind.
  •   做人要光明磊落,不要口說般若,所行又是另一套。
      One’s behavior and conduct must be perfectly open in all actions. Do not act differently from how you speak.
  •   修行人,不要有是非心,那是眾生習氣。
      One who practices self-cultivation must be freed from a mind filled with rights and wrongs, which are the habitual thoughts of regular beings.
  •   修行修得好,到處是道場,到處有人護持。自己住的地方不用大,最重要的是要弘揚佛法;佛法這麼好,為什麼不讓更多人得利益。
      If you conduct yourself well and cultivate yourself, you will discover that any place is suitable for preaching the Buddhist dharma, and you will always find support to sustain your preaching of the Buddhist dharma. You don’t need to worry about whether or not your place is big enough, the only thing that matters is the spread of the Buddhist dharma. Because the Buddhist dharma is so good, we should try to let more people benefit from it.
  •   想要他人讚揚自己、服自己,自己就要以德服人。
      If you want other people to speak highly of you, to believe in and be convinced by you, you have to convince people you are worthy of it by your virtues.
  •   菩薩化度眾生,乃隨緣而做。沒有一位祖師會自認為是祖師,祖師是後人追加的。
      A bodhisattva saves and transforms all sentient beings only upon appropriate conditions. No founder of a sect of Buddhism would think of himself as a founder; such a title was given to him by others only afterwards.
  •   不要多想、胡思亂想,否則想陰成魔,業障就來了。
      Do not wander too much or make blind and disorderly conjectures, otherwise, the aggregate of thought (one of the five aggregates) will become the devil, and you will encounter obstacles in your life resulting from previous karma.
  •   一旦自己的知見生起,眾生心就現前,四相也隨之生起,煩惱就跟著來了。
      Once your own knowledge and viewpoints arise, your mind becomes like that of a layman and the four forms of self, person, all beings, and life span will arise, followed by afflictions.
  •   大地忍辱負重,即是菩薩的精神。
      If we consider the earth to be a person, who takes up any burden or load and endures any insult or humiliation; the spirit of a bodhisattva is just like that.
  •   中醫,有所謂望、聞、問、切;菩薩,也會因人、因時、因地、因緣而說不同的法。
      Just as Chinese traditional medical doctors look at the appearance of the patient, listen to what the patient says, smell the patient,s odors, ask questions, and check the pulse to diagnose and give a prescription; a bodhisattva decides what kind of preaching is appropriate depending on the timing, location, and context.
  •   魔,由習氣門入。魔是名詞,將習氣修斷了,魔就沒有了。若不斷習氣,生活中到處都是魔境。
      Demons enter through your habitual behaviors. When you cut off your habitual behaviors by practice, the demon will be gone; otherwise, the demon is present everywhere in your daily life.
  •   人的福報有正報和依報,依報隨著正報改變;有莊嚴的心地,才有莊嚴的受用物。
      The blessings one obtains have two classifications, original and dependent. Dependent blessings will be relative to the original. Only those with a dignified heart will derive a dignified benefit from blessings.
  •   惜福,以不浪費為原則。
      In cherishing blessings, the basic principle is not to waste anything.
  •   修行人對善、惡、是、非,都要如如不動。
      A person of spiritual cultivation has to remain unmoved when dealing with all the good, the evil, the rights, and the wrongs.
