As traditional Chinese medical doctors would look at the appearance of the patient, listen to what they say about the symptoms, smell their odors, ask questions, and check the pulse to diagnose and give a prescription; a bodhisattva would decide what the content of the Dharma to preach and in what way to present, depending on the individuals, timing, location, and causal conditions.
